Warriors down Atkinson; head into playoffs

The Crofton Warriors didn’t need their “A” game to bet Atkin-son West Holt 27-6 in the regular season finale on Thursday, Oct. 21.
Good thing ... because they didn’t bring their “A” game.
“I think the guys were looking ahead to the playoffs,” said CHS head football coach Tony Hoffman of his team’s less-than-inspired play. “We (the coaches) were even guilty of looking past West Holt.”
The Warriors, who had wrapped up the District C1-6 title the previous week by upending Pierce, were pretty much looking forward to the first round of the C1 state playoffs. They will play host to Wayne tonight (Oct. 28) at 7 pm in the first round of the C1 post-season action.

Head Start has two new faces on faculty

The Goldenrod Hills Commu-nity Action Head Start in Crofton is enjoying another wonderful year with many new faces.
Not only are there some of the children experiencing their first year at Head Start, but so are two new employees. Christy Hagge and Cecilia Eckmann have joined the Head Start team.
Christy Hagge has assumed the role as teacher assistant/nutritionist with the pre-school in downtown Crofton. Hagge has a degree in counseling and psychology and is using her past work experience to enrich the classroom. In previous years, she has been a regular volunteer at her children's school. She has also substitute taught as a para-educator. Hagge's confidence with children is evident. The children enjoy Hagge's gentle voice and mannerisms. Not to mention her nutritious breakfasts and entertaining food experiences.

Warriors win District title with Pierce whitewash

“That ought to make the state sit up and take notice,’ was the comment of a Crofton football fan the day after the Warriors bowled over Pierce 21-0 on Friday night, Oct. 15 in Pierce.
Crofton, 5-1, left little doubt that they are definitely a force to be reckoned within the Class C1 ranks after scoring what one player described as “the biggest win of the year for us so far.”
Key words ... “so far” would be CHS head coach Tony Hoffman’s answer to that. Hoffman was quoted in the Norfolk Daily News saying, “This is a nice win, but we have a lot more games to play.”
First and foremost will be tonight’s (Oct. 21) home game against Atkinson West Holt, 3-2, which will wrap up the regular season for both squads.

Original Shannon sign artwork goes on auction block

The Shannon Trail Promoters continue to develop fresh ideas for promoting the this area of Nebraska by capitalizing on the Lewis & Clark expedition and it’s passing through the region 200 year ago.
The group is particularly fond of the Corps of Discovery’s youngest member -- Private George Shannon, and his ability to get lost. The group has spent the last few years marketing Private Shannon’s 16-day adventure of misdirection, in which he walked from around Sioux City upstream to a spot in Gregory County, SD before he was found by the Corps.
Private Shannon and his “adventure” has been “immortalized” in song, on the stage, wood carvings, brochures, on maps. And very soon, on billboards along troadways of Cedar and Knox counties.

Win over Creighton sets up big District match with Pierce

It’s showdown time.
With the Crofton Warriors’ 34-7 victory over Creighton last Friday, Oct. 8 in the Crofton homecoming game, and Pierce’s 40-7 win over Atkinson West Holt, this Friday’s Crofton-Pierce matchup has all the decor of a post-season playoff game. The game starts at 7 pm in Pierce.
The two clubs sit at a virtual tie atop the C1-6 District power points rankings. Both clubs have 5-1 records. Despite the fact that the game comes in the second-to-last weekend of the regular season, it still has all the importance of a championship match because both squads will finish the regular season with games against teams that are doing well this season. A win this Friday will go along way to giving the victor’s higher seeding when the post-season playoff schedule is announced.

“We are uncertain about how much influenza vaccine we will be receiving,” Sr. Deb stated on Monday, Oct. 11. She said officials with Avera Sacred Heart Health Services, which own and operate the clinics in Crofton and Hartington, are scrambling to locate flu vaccine.
