Historically-based band to perform Lewis & Clark era songs in Crofton

The Lewis and Clark Expedition was not all work and no play.
In the evening around campfires the silence of the newly explored territory was broken by the sounds of fiddles and singing.
On Friday June 30, in the Crofton city auditorium, that music will come alive again as the Discovery String Band from central Missouri performs at 7:30 pm.

"From the hip" by Kevin Henseler, Journal Publisher

Same old story, different year.
Broken record.
Viscious circle.
However you wish to term it, the debate conserning Native American symbols as school mascots re-surfaced last week with an article in the Norfolk Daily News. The article, written by Kathryn Harris, told of how the Neligh-Oakdale school system is revamping its school mascot in an effort to discontinue the Native Ameri-can “Warrior.”
It is a subject that seems to erupt as regularly as Mt. St. Helens belches volcanic ash. This is not the first time the subject of Native American mascots has been hashed before the public’s view, and it probably won’t be the last.

'Nimblewood Nomad' passes through Crofton on cross country walk

South Dakota calls itself the “Land of Infinite Variety,” but if one were to ask M.J. Eberhart which state has provided him the most “variety” on his current venture, he’d probably answer, “Neb-raska.”
Eberhart, who goes by “Eb,” is a retired optometrist from the middle of Missouri who is walking the return route of Lewis & Clark.
Yes, walking.

City council to deal with rogue ATVs on city streets

The use and abuse of 4-wheelers within the city limits was one of the main topics of discussion at the Monday, June 5, monthly meeting. During last month’s meeting, councilmen expressed concern over the use of 4-wheelers or all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in the city limits. They asked city attorney Dale Riesberg to research any legal avenues they could use to control the ATV traffic.
Riesberg pointed out that it “boiled down” to a few who drive the vehicles with reckless abandonment, which make it tough for the rest of the ATV owners. He reviewed state statutes and told the board ATVs were exempt from vehicle registration.

Smoking the sewer lines is not some druggie vernacular

“Smoking the sewer lines.”
Sounds like some covert language used among druggies.
Actually, the two days early this week that was spent “smoking the sewer lines,” the city maintenece workers and a few helpers, were doing just that -- running smoke through the city sewer lines.
“Doing this tells us if there are broken sewer lines in the system,” said Jim Heyen, from Wahoo, who is a wastwater technician with the Nebraska Rural Water Association (NRWA).
