Crofton man gets WWII award -- quite late

“Better late than never” may not be one of Maurice Carr’s favorite sayings, but in the case of his World War II service record, it’s the perfect cliche.
Recently the mailman delivered to the 81-year-old Crofton man’s front door -- a bronze star - a very precious memento of Carr’s service years in WWII. The award was only a few years overdue.
“Everything burned down and they lost the records,” Carr said when explaining why he received this medal so late in life. On a trip last fall to Center, Carr talked to the service master of the VFW, Leonard Boggs, about a hearing aid. But he ended up with much more.

Crofton firemen had busy Saturday

The Crofton firemen almost didn’t know which way to turn Saturday afternoon as a pair of mutual aid calls had them going in two directions -- but fortunately, not at the exact same time.
Local firemen were called out to the Devils Nest area around 1:40 pm Saturday to help the Bloomfield firemen battle a grass fire just north of the ski lift area. Around five acres of ground was burned. Niobrara and Santee fire departments also responded to the call for help.
