Crofton area educator writes book on youth and self-esteem

When Baker accepted a position as guidance counselor in the Coleridge school system, she thought more seriously about writing that book and decided it would be a children’s book. During her long drives back and forth to Coleridge and Laurel for school days, she found ideas popping into her head.
Finally an idea for a children’s book surfaced and wouldn’t go away. After about three years of writing and re-writing, just like that it came together and was done. “I Am Different ... But That’s Okay With Me” is the title of Baker’s first endeavor.
“You would get an idea and work on it,” Baker said. “Then you would get busy and put it aside, eventually coming back to it.”
Next, she looked for an illustrator. Everyone was busy and Baker was on a budget. Then her daughter suggested a friend, Kari Wockman, a Crofton High School graduate who lives in Arizona. So the two built an email relationship.

New alumni officers create school lunch cookbook; offer it for sale

Somethin’ good is cookin’ in the Crofton Alumni Association!
You may recall, back in the weeks following the last Crofton Alumni Association’s annual reunion, in July, there were articles in the paper about the fact that three of the four longstanding officers of the alumni group had stepped down; and no one had stepped up to fill the vacant positions.
Then, late in July, three classmates decided they didn’t want to see the association just fall by the wayside, so they volunteerd and took over as officers. The three new officers are all from the class of 1996. They are Diane Schieffer of Fremont, and Kevin Halle of Wayne, who will be co-chairs, Jesica Merkel of St. Helena, secretary. They join Peg Schieffer, who remains as the association’s treasurer.

Senior Center seeks new manager; ways to up meal count

After guiding the Crofton Senior Citizens Center for the last nine years, Bev Merkel has decided to leave her position as manager.
Merkel made her decision known at the January 16 board of directors meeting and then it was repeated at the January 17 public hearing concerning use of the senior center. Merkel was unable to attend the hearing, because her mother was seriously ill.
Senior citizens president Virginia Lange and secretary Shirley Sawatzke were told of Merkel’s resignation at the board meeting. She has been the manager for nine and a half years and board members said many times during the public hearing that she “has done an excellent job.”

Wynot, Crofton school boards discuss consolidation ideas

“We certainly are interested in talking about consolidating schools,” Crofton board of education president Kieth Zimmerman told the Wynot board of education at an informational meeting last Wednesday, Jan. 17 between the two boards.
“And we have a lot of students who want to become Warriors,” said Wynot board member Karen Boeckman.
The two boards came together last week in Crofton to discuss a possible consolidation. They talked about being in the same Educational Service Unit, staff numbers, student numbers, special education students and special needs students – even school lunches were discussed.
But in spite of the many things both boards cited as reasons a consolidation move could work, no agreement could be forged. Both boards admitted there were too many questions without answers to make a decision.
