05/20/2007: "Sr. Charlotte gets taken for a ride by students"

There were surprises for everyone last Tuesday at St. Rose Elementary School.
Little did Sr. Charlotte know, when she called the fire drill at 10:55 am, it would make the students much more nervous than usual.
You see, Sr. Charlotte had no clue the children had been planning a special farewell party for her. They kept as quiet as church mice. Ken Prussa’s horse and buggy, which would treat Sr. Charlotte to one last gallop around town, would be there at 11:30 am.

As the students quietly fretted whether this fire drill would be over before the team of horses showed up, Sr. Charlotte remarked at how efficient the children completed the process. It went like clockwork – may have even broke a record.
A native of Chicago, Sr. Charlotte has spent 29 years of her 52 as a nun, in Crofton. She taught at schools in Wisconsin and Illinois after joining the School Sisters of St. Francis in Milwaukee in 1953, and taking her final vows in 1955. When she got to Crofton, it seemed like home, so she stayed.
The parish community, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, honored Sr. Charlotte the first weekend in May with an open house. Parishonmers, teachers and students were also introduced to the incoming head teacher Scott Becker, and said farewell to Sr. Siegfrieda, who will also retire and return to Wisconsin to reside at Campbells Port, WI, in a retirement home for members of the School Sisters of St. Francis.
Schuele’s next call as a Franciscan nun will be at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton working in the Pastoral Care Department. She already began training in February for her new position and looks forward to the adjustment. She will live in Creighton, with Sr. Margaret Sybell, and commute to Yankton for the part-time position.
A luncheon followed the buggy ride and the children entertained. With surprise on Sr. Charlotte’s face, the students “Thanked her for the Memories.”
