01/31/2007: "Speech team opens season by collecting many honors"


The Crofton speech team kicked off its 2007 season by hauling home 13 medals from the Hartington Invitational, held Saturday, Jan. 27.
Leading the way were Maddy Larson and Amber Hegge, each of whom won a pair of medals. Larson took second in varsity serious prose and teamed with Kelsey Custer for fifth in varsity duet acting. Hegge, competing in the novice division, got third in informative speaking and joined Nicole Van Heek to take first in duet acting.


Other local speakers who medaled in the varsity division were: Matt Oltmanns, third in entertainment; Emily Nohr, fourth in serious prose; and Stacie Guenther, sixth in persuasive.
Novices from Crofton who earned medals included: Scott Lancaster, second in entertainment; Matt Merchen, fourth in extemporaneous; Jenna Guenther, fourth in humorous prose; Megan Miller, fourth in informative; Alison Hoffman, fourth in serious prose; and Kelsey Oltmanns, fifth in persuasive.
Darin Guenther and Megan Schiferl were two Crofton speakers who came within one point of getting into the finals in their events.
The speech team, which is once again being coached by Roxie Pier and Lisa Nissen, will be in Wausa this Saturday, Feb. 3 for their invitational.
