06/22/2006: "Historically-based band to perform Lewis & Clark era songs in Crofton"

The Lewis and Clark Expedition was not all work and no play.
In the evening around campfires the silence of the newly explored territory was broken by the sounds of fiddles and singing.
On Friday June 30, in the Crofton city auditorium, that music will come alive again as the Discovery String Band from central Missouri performs at 7:30 pm.

This band is not new to the area. Last year, through an arts council grant, the Discovery String Band performed at many Shannon Trail locations. This year the Shannon Trail and with the help of a grant from Nebraska Humanities, they have provided for their return.
Dressed in costumes from the 1800s, and playing instruments popular in the 1700 and 1800s, such as the harmonica, autoharp, mouthbow, Indian flute, banjo, guitar, jawbone, pennywhistle, jaw harp, bones, spoons, triangle, fiddle and mandolin, Dave, Kathy, Bob and Kelly will bring heartwarming songs and laughter to northeast Nebraska.
These accomplished musicians are a crowd pleaser for the entire family.
The Discovery String Band Members are: Cathy Barton, Dave Para, Bob Dyer and Kelly Werts.  All four members are professional musicians with a technique of telling the story of Lewis and Clark through Music and narrative.
The Discovery String Band had the opportunity to play at many national Lewis and Clark signature events and have recorded many of their favorite songs on a CD called “Most Perfect Harmony” Lewis and Clark a Musical Journey.
This is a great opportunity for young and old alike to learn the history of the Lewis and Clark expedition in a musical entertaining setting. Advance tickets are $8 and can be purchased from: Cozy Corner Café in Verdigre, Corps of Discovery Welcome Center south of Yankton on highway 81, Sally’s Antiques and Sweets in Bloomfield, St. James Market Place, Action Sports in Creighton, Winnetoon Mall, Historic Argo Hotel in Crofton, Gillette Printing in Norfolk or Western Trails downtown Yankton. Or you can call 402-373-2663 to order tickets or email lklarsen_72@gpcom.net for more information. Tickets are $10 at the door, ages 10 and under free.
The Shannon Trail and a Nebraska Humanities Grant made the Discovery String Band concert possible.
